¾ pound ground beef
¾ pound sweet Italian sausage
1 medium sweet onion, chopped
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 small (15 ounces) can tomato sauce
1 can condensed tomato soup, undiluted
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons dried basil
2 cups cooked rice (white or brown)
1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
¼ cup finely chopped carrot
¼ cup chopped parsley
1 teaspoon salt or to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper or to taste
½ head of cabbage, cored and thinly sliced
In a large sauté pan, over medium heat, combine ground beef, sausage, onions and garlic. Sauté until beef and sausage are brown and crumbly and onions are soft. Allow to cool.
Meanwhile in a pan, over medium heat, combine tomato sauce, tomato soup, oregano and basil and simmer for 10 minutes.
In large bowl combine meat mixture, rice, bell pepper, carrot, parsley, salt and pepper and mix well.
Place the sliced cabbage on the bottom of the slow cooker, cover this with the meat and rice mixture and pour the tomato mixture over the entire mixture.
Cook on low for 7 – 8 hours or on high for 3 – 4 hours.
