Sandwiches

 4 slices cooked deli turkey

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 slices cooked smoked deli ham

4 slices provolone cheese

12 slices white bread

1 ½ cups all purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

¾ cup milk

½ cup water (perhaps a little more to thin batter)

1 large egg, beaten

Several dashes of hot sauce, to taste

Vegetable Oil for frying

Red Raspberry Jam

Powdered Sugar

 

For each sandwich, layer one slice bread, one slice turkey, one slice Swiss cheese, one slice bread, one slice ham and finish with one slice bread.  Slice diagonally and tightly wrap each half in plastic wrap.  Place in refrigerator for 2 hours, up to 24 hours.  This helps keep the sandwiches together when frying.

 

Combine flour, baking powder and salt, mix well.  Beat milk, water, egg and hot sauce together, add to flour mixture and mix well.  (add more water if necessary to thin)

 

Using either a deep-fryer or a heavy skillet (1 inch of oil), preheat oil to 350 degrees (or until a bread cube dropped into oil, bubbles and browns quickly).  Dip each sandwich half into batter and fry in preheated oil, flipping sandwich if necessary to brown both sides (use tongs to avoid splattering hot oil).

 

Remove to paper towels to drain.

 

Serve sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a side of jam or syrup.
